The Power of Acceptance: (blog post)
While the power of self-acceptance is something we must all embrace to free ourselves from our fear and others people's disbelief, it so very hard to do for several reasons. First, we compare ourselves to others and oftentimes covet our sister’s gifts by wishing to have what is not ours. More specifically, someone has beautiful hair, we want it; someone has a loving family life, we want; someone has a better voice and we want it. But we don't know the blood, sweat and tears or the sacrifices made by those we covet that helped them get what they have. Instead, we sit on the sidelines of life and limit ourselves instead of appreciating our passion, our values and our own abilities are more than enough to manifest what we most want.
Similarly, we fail to acknowledge that everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and testimonies that make their inner light shine brighter. During my "Get Real Talks," I often ask women and girls what makes them special. Sadly, most responses are stutters, stammers and long pauses instead of bold statements of faith about their specialties and/or specialness. But what I know for sure is that everyone has a specialness about them that someone is attracted to. But if you're nit special to you, then your specialness will not come shining through. So even if you are not perfect, appreciate that you are special and have the potential of becoming more special each day when you love yourself, forgive yourself and believe in yourself.
We also fail to accept ourselves by allowing other people's words and actions to kill our joy. Don't get me wrong, we can learn from others, but we shouldn’t allow anyone to define us or defile us. So even if you are unsure about the how, stand up for yourself, look the enemy of your dreams in the eye, and say, “Don’t judge me until you know me, don’t underestimate me until you challenge me, and don’t talk about me until you’ve talked to me." If nothing more, you must be bold and courageous throughout your process to become who you were meant to be.
Lastly, we don't like to be alone, rejected or deemed as unworthy so we pick and choose what is and what shouldn't be instead of letting go and letting God throughout the process. Just know, when we are rejected or something ends unexpectedly, we should be mindful that there is a reason for each season in that some things lie dormant, while others blossom, others wither away and still others fall away. Similarly, some things and people come into our lives as blessings and others as lessons based on God's plans and purpose for our lives.
This has never been put better than in the ‘Serenity Prayer’, created by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, and later adopted by Alcoholics’ Anonymous: ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.’ Accordingly, don't compare yourself or limit yourself based on what you see, but take moments in each day to appreciate that no one can do you like you do, love you as much as you or make your dreams come true for you. So keep seeking better and doing more to unleash the beauty within you.
