I felt like a failure when I left my fledgling legal practice at an insurance defense firm after realizing it wasn’t for me. I felt like a failure when I left a marketing firm that promised debt freedom after realizing it wasn’t for me. I felt like a failure when I merged my own legal practice into another firm despite the regular influx of clients because I could not keep up with every aspect of being a solo practitioner. I also felt like a failure after deciding to venture into the nontraditional practice of law after realizing I needed a more flexible schedule to do what was best for me. I felt like a failure because I could not succeed at what others thought I was SUPPOSED to do given my knowledge, background and thousands of dollars accrued pursuing my law school education. I started and stopped and started again to assimilate with the lay counselors’ vision for me since they seemingly knew better than me because of what they noticed others did in the past. I tried to do it for others, but then I decided to live my life for my multifaceted self. I currently serve as an investigator, a counselor, an adjunct professor, a motivational speaker and the founding president of Diva Moment, Inc., a women for women support organization. The lesson I learned is that Do Over are acceptable even as a grown up. In fact, I have had the opportunity to interview successful people to determine how they became successful. In most cases they started, stopped and started again and again until something clicked with them and they found their own cadence. That moment in time tended to be when they listened to their heart and chased after their recurring dreams. As for you, what do you do when you encounter a setback? Do you allow the circumstantial setback to prevent you from successfully completing your life journey? And right before you decide to do over, do you take a moment to determine the lesson you needed to learn before you start again?
